Things just can’t seem to stay on the positive side for the Canes this offseason.

The University of Miami confirmed Friday that sophomore Lawrence Cager sustained a right knee injury and will miss the entire 2016 season. The school also confirmed that the injury occurred during an on-campus 7-on-7 workout.

Losing Cager for a significant amount of time depletes an already thin Hurricane receiver corp.

Stacy Coley, who missed time during the spring with a hamstring injury, Braxton Berrios, Malcolm Lewis and Darrell Langham were Miami’s only active scholarship receivers during the spring.

While Cager, a 6-foot-5, 210-pounder, didn’t make a big splash during his freshman campaign – totaling eight receptions for 70 yards – and received criticism during the spring from coach Mark Richt for subpar use of his large frame; he was still someone that would’ve seen action – at least in goal line situations.

Cager’s potential extended absence further opens the door for true freshmen Sam Bruce, Ahmmon Richards and Dionte Mullins – if he qualifies academically – to come in and carve out contributing roles sooner rather than later.
